Creating Writing Prompts with Discovery Education



  • Discovery Education can help students by writing in response to a text-based writing prompt on the computer.

  • Discovery Education can help teachers create and save writing prompts easily with other teachers and students.

1. Teachers will need to have a Discovery Education Account established.

Teacher Login Directions:

Teacher's must login to the Discovery Education website using a district provided school passcode.
1. Go to http://www.discoveryeducation.com
2. Click the Passcode/New User tab.
3. Type in the school specific passcode provided by the district.
4. Please use first.last or first.last@cmcss.net as your username and choose a password.
5. Complete the registration process to create your individual teacher account.

*If you previously had a trial account or individual account with Discovery Education and have difficulty logging in with your email address and school code, please click here and follow the directions for logging in with a school code.



2. Teachers will need to have a class made in Discovery Education to assign writing prompts to students.

Creating a class(es) in Discovery Education

1. Once you are in Discovery, click on the
CLASSROOM MANAGER tab and MY CLASSES

2. Click on Create A Class from School Roster

3. Give your class a name.

4. Filter the students in your school by grade level,
click GO

5. Put a check beside each student you want to be
added to your class.

6. You will notice your class is being built to the right.

7. You can go to different pages to select students
and it will keep your student selections on previous pages.

PRESS SAVE WHEN YOUR CLASS IS COMPLETE.





3. Teacher selects content and grade level appropriate nonfiction text to include in the text based writing prompt.

Helpful Reminders for Teachers when writing and teaching writing from TNCORE


  • Students will read two complex informational texts.
  • Texts will cover social studies or science topics in order to demonstrate the range of informational reading possible in a Common Core curriculum.
  • Students will write two essays:
    • One prose constructed response essay about the first text. The essay will be an analytical summary (informational/explanatory).
    • One prose constructed response analytical essay about both texts. The essay will be informational/explanatory or opinion.

4. Teacher creates a folder under the MY CONTENT tab to store writing prompts.


Adding a folder within My Content allows you to organize resources so that you can easily find them. You may also create folders within folders to further organize your resources.

1. Within My Content, click on the “Add Folder” button. You can add your writing prompts here to find and share them easily.

2. A new folder will appear. This will allow you to name the new folder.

3. Title the new folder WRITING PROMPTS , and click “Create”.

5. Teacher creates a writing prompt in the Writing Prompt Builder on Discovery Education.




6. Teacher assigns the writing prompt to the class or individual students.

1. After the prompt has been built and saved.
Teachers can Assign it to the class several ways.

2. One way is to go to the MY CONTENT tab, and find the desired writing prompt and to the left drop the menu down and choose ASSIGN.

3. Teachers will then choose the details
of the writing prompt such as date, class, and students, then click SAVE.

4. When students login, they will see the prompt under the ASSIGNMENTS tab.

5. Students can complete the prompt at any computer with Internet connection. They can return multiple times to work on the prompt and finally submit to the teacher.



7. Teachers collaborate and share with others to build a writing prompt library.

You may share resources, within My Content, on a school and/or district level. This allows subscribers, within your school or district, to access your favorite Discovery Education media resources, assignments, quizzes and writing prompts.

1. Locate a resource or a folder, within My Content, that you wish to share with your school or district.

2. Select Share from the Action drop down menu. You can share whole folders or just one prompt inside the folder.

3. A Link will be displayed and you can simple send that to anyone with a discovery account. They can then use the prompt and edit if needed.

4. Folders and Assignments can also be copied to your school tab for others to access.

4. To access content within your school or district, go back to My Content and select either the School tab on top of the page.
